Speaker Bio

erik whealy - Comptroller and LEAN Core Team Co-Chair

QUALIFICATIONS: Erik has over 20 years of financial and operations management experience working in the manufacturing industry – the birthplace of the LEAN revolution.  This experience, combined with four years of accounting and operations management experience in the construction industry, perfectly qualify Erik to serve as Co-Chair of KCS’ LEAN Core Team.  As Co-Chair, Erik is instrumental in championing the deployment of LEAN tools, developing innovative approaches for using LEAN principles to sustain KCS’ continuous improvement efforts, and educating team members at every level of the organization about the value and importance of the LEAN movement.  Erik also works to share his expertise and passion with the community by annually presenting to Construction Management undergraduate students at Northern Arizona University.

Formally trained in transformational leadership, Erik has successfully led organization-wide LEAN cultural transformations, performed process facilitation, and provided leadership in business strategic management for over 10 years.  He has achieved significant success using tools such as Kaizen, 5S, Visual Controls, Kanban, and Continuous Flow, as well as Six Sigma concepts.  In addition, Erik served on the board of Manex, a National Institute of Standards and Testing (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) support firm that provides LEAN, process, and IT improvement consulting resources to small manufacturing firms throughout northern California.

EDUCATION: Master of Business Administration, Finance concentration | Golden Gate University • Bachelor of Science in Finance | California State University, Northridge

Anthony Loscavio - Project Manager and LEAN Core Team Co-Chair

QUALIFICATIONS: An early LEAN adapter and proponent, Anthony currently serves as the Co-Chair of the KCS LEAN Core Team.  He has formally been a LEAN Practitioner since 2004, and his involvement with LCI has been wholehearted and continuous ever since.  Anthony’s wide-ranging professional background includes over 30 years of experience in Project Management.  Notably, he has served as a Change Agent during various roles throughout his career, including his tenure as an Executive at an ENR top 200 constructor.  As Vice President of Design and Construction of an Imaging Company, Anthony was responsible for managing the firm’s national roll-out and later served as a Principal for a Healthcare Architecture firm.

His leadership and management experience is extensive: he has served on three Corporate Boards of Directors; led initiatives while performing in roles such as Steering Committee Chair for Total Quality Management (TQM) and Co-Founder of IPC; and was the first to introduce partnering principals coupled with process benchmarking to Mobil Torrance Refinery, Kaiser Permanente, and Anheuser-Busch.  As a dynamic contributor to Sutter Health’s LEAN principles and practices, Tony was a catalyst for cultural transformation, quality initiatives, process improvements, cost containment, and the formulation of an IFOA.  To best support his commitment to expanding and exploring the application of LEAN principles, Anthony is an active member of LEAN Construction Institute (LCI), Alliance for Construction Excellence (ACE), and Central Arizona Society of Healthcare Engineers (CASHE), in addition to presenting annually to Construction Management undergraduate students at Northern Arizona University.

LCI Arizona Chapter

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Arizona Chapter of LCI has been developed to provide local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers who are doing business in the state of Arizona.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share and develop a lean community in Arizona.  For more information, please e-mail lci-arizona@leanconstruction.org
